Special

When you think of photographing newborn sessions, what makes them so special? Why is it so important to photograph them brand new? Many do not know the answer to this question! When babies are born, and are still small, their parents look at them and only see their tiny little baby. However, newborn photographers aim to photograph a newborn under 14 days of age! The reason is that, not only do they grow rapidly, but the more time they spend outside of the tummy they become more stimulated with their environment. Essentially, every day that passes actually reduces the likelihood of them sleeping through a majority of poses, as well as transitions between poses.

What happens when a baby is born months before their due date? Yes, they are small and most likely fairly sleepy. However, they aren’t used to being undressed or being posed. They’ve already started to build muscle and learn to react to situations they don’t love. So although newborn sessions can still be accomplished, usually these sessions are more time consuming and limit the type of poses that can be done with a FRESH newborn.

I have also found through my 10 years of experience, that newborns are also better off being photographed earlier then later when they’ve gone overdue! Every day that passes, I count that as if they had already been born. Their muscles are growing and their strength is too. Stronger bigger babies are much harder to wrap, and pose into certain props that we all enjoy.

And yes, there are the ODD newborns that LOVE to surprise us and sleep like logs even though they might be 3-4 weeks old, but if that was the case with every baby….. the new age standard would definitely change LOL!

So although thats not a HUGE amount of information, that gives you a little bit of insight on why we prefer and choose to do newborn sessions under 14 days old. We are better able to predict the outcome of a newborn session when we remain within those limits.

That is one HUGE reason why it is SO important to book your newborn session when you are still pregnant! Because even if your baby does come early, then your photographer is able to plan ahead and work with the changed circumstances.

As a newborn photographer, we LOVE what we do, and our little clients are the most important thing to us. So when parents plan ahead, we are better able to do our amazing jobs and create beautiful pieces of art!
