Who is the best Edmonton newborn photographer? This question is asked all the time online, in forums, on google searches and hashtag searches. But really there are many possibilities to the answers. First lets dissect what type of newborn photography you are really drawn to. Did you know there are different options available to you as a client? I’ve been photographing Edmonton Newborn babies for over 12 years and have loved every minute of it, but this has given me many different experiences through the years as well.

To name a few, I worked out of my home living room when I first started in 2012. That was the very beginning of my journey and it was fine while I was learning posing and running a business. As I grew my family, my home expanded and I was able to build a designated home studio room above my garage. That was excellent, but it meant that clients traveled to my home in Calmar. Of course our lives changed dramatically as we wanted to spend more time travelling and so we downsized our home for a few years. This meant that I moved my studio into the City of Edmonton, and I’ve been renting a studio space near the Edmonton Airport ever since.

So besides having either a home studio or a rented studio, I also was able to go to peoples homes and do a hybrid style session where we did lifestyle parent posing and I brought my studio props, flooring and lighting with me and did a posed portion as well. This was not manageable for myself and I’ve since quit doing the hybrid option.

And then finally there is the newborn photography lifestyle option. As an Edmonton newborn photography offering luxury studio sessions, I very rarely get to go into peoples homes and offer newborn lifestyle sessions. However I must say that I absolutely love the cozy feel and love that is portrayed in newborn lifestyle. What does a newborn lifestyle session look like? Here are a few samples.

Ok what exactly is a hybrid session? Well a hybrid session is where you get both lifestyle and posed portraits. However sadly client’s have no idea how much work that is to bring everything to them, and don’t want to pay for it. Now that I’ve quit doing it, I would require a minimum of a $2000 investment to offer a hybrid option + the session fee of $300. Why? Because not only am I spending hours packing up everything to bring, I’m risking ruining all of those items as well. Our props are sourced from all over the world and most of our items cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars each. Then it takes time to unpack all of the items into the home, then time to set everything up. You’re looking at a 2-3 hour time frame just for that, and then to pack it all back into the vehicle, bring back to the studio and then put it all away you’re looking at another 2-3 hours of time. So before we’ve taken a single image it’s now 5-6 hours we’ve already invested.

You’ve also got to remember the price of fuel is higher then ever and our newborn sessions taken around 3 hours as well. So the investment in packing, delivery, unpacking, photographing, packing up and unpacking back at studio along with driving to and from is a huge investment for the photographer in time and resources. That is one of the biggest reasons I choose to do either 100% lifestyle at peoples homes, or offer luxury Newborn Photography at my Edmonton studio.

What does a posed newborn session look like? | Best Edmonton Newborn Photographer

Posed newborn photography sessions are careful curated and planned ahead of time. We offer multiple options for props, wardrobe for mothers and backdrops for families. I’ve also got a lifestyle option inside my studio with natural lighting along with studio lighting.

These are beautiful portraits that are definitely wall worthy! I absolutely love this job. But I still haven’t answered the question yet, Who is the Best Edmonton Newborn Photographer? or Best Edmonton Newborn Photographers?

Now that you’ve seen examples of different styles, you can see how there could be different photographers that you want to lean towards. So after you’ve decided exactly what your style is, then I’ve got a few questions for you to ask photographers when you are looking to choose the perfect newborn photographer to document your brand new baby!

So if you like the very curly and adorable perfected fabric and prop posing, you’d want to search for a “Posed newborn photographer”.

If you like the hybrid option, you’d still want to look for a “Posed newborn photographer” that is offering to come to your residence.

Lastly, if you prefer the natural unposed look then simple search for “Edmonton Newborn Lifestyle Photographers” because that should turn up some good options. However, if you aren’t getting enough results, you can search for “Edmonton’s Best Newborn Photographer” but you’ll need to look through there gallery and make sure their style alines with your vision.

• Do they specialize in it? If you were going to hire a wedding photographer would you want to hire someone who has only ever photographed kids in the Walmart studio? Or would you rather hire someone who makes a living off of weddings and knows every possible option that they can offer you, regardless of the circumstances that could happen on the big day? If I was going to a doctor to get treatment for something that was time sensitive and in a very delicate part of my body, I’d want to make sure it was someone who was extensively trained with years of experience doing it!
• Reviews – Read the reviews. Google reviews are best! Search them up on google and read their reviews to see what other clients have to say!
• Blog & Portfolio – Ask to see if you can see full galleries if they aren’t shown on their blog or portfolio
• Price – It’s not just about what you can afford, it should be something you’ve saved up for. Why? Because you shouldn’t be basing your newborn’s well being and safety in the hands of someone who has barely worked with newborns before. You should be choosing someone who has dedicated hundreds of hours perfecting their craft and can handle anything that comes there way!
