Simple, practical tips to help you feel calm, confident, and ready | Edmonton Newborn and Maternity Photographer
Bringing your newborn in for a professional photo session is such an exciting milestone — one that many parents look forward to even before baby arrives. But let’s be honest… when you’re running on little sleep, adjusting to life with a newborn, and figuring out feedings and naps, the thought of getting out the door on time for a photo session can feel overwhelming.
The good news? It doesn’t have to be stressful.
As a professional Edmonton newborn photographer (serving Leduc, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Calmar, Devon, and surrounding areas), I’ve worked with hundreds of families over the years — and I’ve learned exactly what helps new parents walk into their session feeling calm, prepared, and ready to enjoy the experience.
Here are my best tips for prepping for your newborn photo session without the stress:

1. Feed Baby Right Before You Leave (Or When You Arrive) | Edmonton Newborn and Maternity Photographer
A full belly = a sleepy baby. One of the best ways to prepare your little one for their session is to plan a good, full feeding either just before you leave the house or as soon as you arrive at the studio. Many of my clients bring baby in comfy pajamas and then give a relaxed feed before we start. This helps baby settle into a nice, deep sleep — which makes posing safer, smoother, and more successful.
If you’re pumping or formula feeding, bring along extra bottles just in case. And don’t stress if baby needs a top-up mid-session — we always allow time for feeding breaks!

2. Bring a Pacifier (Even If Baby Doesn’t Usually Take One) | Edmonton Newborn and Maternity Photographer
Even if your baby hasn’t taken to a pacifier yet, it’s worth bringing one along. Sometimes, just a few seconds of gentle sucking can help settle baby between poses — especially if they’re in a light sleep. It’s not a must, but it can make a big difference during transitions.
If you prefer not to use a pacifier, no problem at all. I always follow the parents’ lead.

3. Dress for Comfort (Yes, You Too!) | Edmonton Newborn and Maternity Photographer
The studio will be warm and cozy to keep baby comfortable — usually around 26–28°C (78–82°F). We do this because a warm environment helps newborns stay sleepy and content when undressed or wrapped in light fabric.
For baby: bring them in a zip-up sleeper that’s easy to remove. Avoid anything that pulls over the head or has lots of snaps. You won’t need outfits — I have a full collection of wraps, outfits, bonnets, and props here at the studio.
For parents and siblings: wear soft, neutral tones (like beige, cream, white, or grey) and dress in breathable layers. Avoid bold patterns, logos, and anything you might find uncomfortable in a warm room. If you’re planning to be in photos (which I highly recommend!), bring along one simple outfit change just in case. But I also have many beautiful gowns to borrow at my studio if you want to glam up your photo session.

4. Allow Plenty of Time to Arrive | Edmonton Newborn and Maternity Photographer
Babies run on their own schedule — which means getting out the door can take longer than expected. Plan a little extra time for feeding, diaper changes, or car seat wriggles, and try to arrive a few minutes early so you’re not rushed. My studio is designed to be a peaceful, welcoming space where you can take a deep breath and settle in.
And don’t worry if you’re running late. Life with a newborn isn’t always predictable, and I totally understand.

5. Relax — I’ve Got You | Edmonton Newborn and Maternity Photographer
Once you arrive at the studio, your only job is to relax. You don’t have to pose the baby, soothe them, or make sure everything goes perfectly. I’ll take care of all of that — with over 13 years of experience posing and photographing newborns, I’m here to create a calm, safe, and beautiful experience for both you and your baby.
There’s a comfy space to sit, refreshments, a washroom, and everything needed to keep you cozy during your time here. Many parents even take a nap or scroll their phone while I work with baby. That’s the beauty of a well-prepped session — you get to enjoy it.

Booking a newborn session doesn’t have to be one more thing on your “to-stress-about” list. With the right prep and a photographer who truly understands newborns, the whole experience can be peaceful, meaningful, and even fun.
